The casts vying for the 2024 Best Film Ensemble SAG Award hail from “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer.” Our current racetrack odds indicate that the “Oppenheimer” team (82/25) will triumph, followed in order of likelihood by the actors from “Barbie” (37/10), “American Fiction” (9/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “The Color Purple” (9/2).

For the first time since 2021, all five films nominated for this ensemble prize are also in the running for at least one individual acting award. None produced four solo nominees like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” both did last year, but “Oppenheimer” got close with three: star Cillian Murphy and featured players Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt. Those with two (one lead and one supporting) each are “American Fiction” (Jeffrey Wright; Sterling K. Brown), “Barbie” (Margot Robbie; Ryan Gosling), and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Lily Gladstone; Robert De Niro), while the only one with one is “The Color Purple” (supporting actress Danielle Brooks).

Of the 46 qualifying performers involved in this race, 28 (or 60.9%) are new to the category. This includes Issa Rae, whose “American Fiction” and “Barbie” bids make her the second Black woman to simultaneously compete as a member of two casts, following Janelle Monáe (“Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight,” 2017). In addition to former “Black Panther” (2019) cast member Brown, those seeking their second ensemble victories are Helen Mirren (“Barbie”; “Gosford Park,” 2002), Brendan Fraser (“Killers of the Flower Moon”; “Crash,” 2006), and Taraji P. Henson (“The Color Purple”; “Hidden Figures”).

Mirren and Fraser have also achieved solo film wins for “The Queen” (2007) and “The Whale” (2023), respectively. The same applies to Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”; “The Revenant,” 2016) as well as Blunt (“A Quiet Place,” 2019) and her “Oppenheimer” cast mate, Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” 2019). Those in this lineup who have bagged individual TV trophies are Mirren (“Elizabeth I,” 2007; “Phil Spector,” 2014), Brown (“This Is Us,” 2018), Downey (“Ally McBeal,” 2001), “Killers of the Flower Moon” actor John Lithgow (“3rd Rock from the Sun,” 1997-1998; “The Crown,” 2017), and “Barbie” actress America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty,” 2008).

Now on his record-tying seventh ensemble notice, DiCaprio is looking to avoid becoming the first person to lose the award that many times. Those whose bid totals match his are Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt, who respectively prevailed in 2004 (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”) and 2010 (“Inglourious Basterds”). Henson, Robbie, and De Niro have now reached movie cast nomination totals of four, as has Matt Damon (“Oppenheimer”).

This year’s winning film ensemble will be revealed during the 30th SAG Awards ceremony, streaming February 24 exclusively on Netflix.
