Sabrina Elba Says Working with Husband Idris Is ‘A Big Learning Curve’ (Exclusive)

The 35-year-old speaks exclusively to PEOPLE about launching skincare brand S'ABLE Labs on day one of Beautycon LA

Sabrina Elba is opening up about adjusting to working with husband Idris.

In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE on day one of Beautycon LA, Sabrina, 35, admits to going through a “big learning curve” collaborating with her actor spouse, 51, on their skincare brand S’ABLE Labs, which launched last July.

“It's not a perfect tie-in, but we’ve definitely developed ways of working together,” Sabrina — who rocked an oversized pinstripe blazer and matching skirt as she appeared on a panel at Saturday's event — tells PEOPLE. “We started a podcast to kind of see how other people were doing it, and we learned so much.”

“I think it's having correct boundaries and understanding that like you know, finding work is not the same as finding a date night,” the skincare co-founder continued. “There are appropriate avenues — work hours, for instance, that's been a big learning curve for me.”

Through launching S’ABLE Labs genderless skincare with Idris, an extension of the pair’s lifestyle brand which launched in 2021, Sabrina adds that she “can’t imagine doing it with anyone else.”

Beautycon LA presented by Walmart ® returns after a four-year hiatus to its hometown of Los Angeles this weekend, welcoming on day one the biggest names in beauty, fashion and entertainment, including Sabrina, fellow beauty brand founder Tia Mowry, Marsai Martin, Alabama Barker, Shirley Raines, Britni Ricard and more.

Sabrina, who grew up in Canada and is of Somali descent, explains at the event that she launched S’ABLE Labs skincare to tend to the issues Black people have with their skin that are unaccommodated for in the beauty industry.

“Growing up I always thought there was nothing that addressed my unique skincare concerns, especially when it comes to having melanin rich skin,” Sabrina tells PEOPLE. “So things like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Just finding products that address it holistically rather than trying to solve the problem after the fact.”

“We’re looking at how we inhibit melanin excess production in the first place,” Sabrina explains. “So we’re making antioxidants, we’re making anti-inflammatories. There's so many amazing ingredients on the (African) continent that are so popular that I watched my mom use growing up. So just trying to get that all in.”

Sabrina adds that she and Idris intended their skincare products to have  “minimum impact on the planet” with “maximum” results.

“Black consumers, really do care about the planet as well,” she tells PEOPLE. “They care about the luxury of their products without having to pay exorbitant prices or just good quality ingredients that we feel we've created.”

Outside of their business partnership, Sabrina says she and Idris make sure to set some personal time away from work together for trips.

“I go to the continent as much as I can go, so recently, Rwanda, and we were so blessed,” she tells PEOPLE of the pair’s latest trip. “We got to join this gorilla naming ceremony and it's my first time doing the gorilla trek. So we named the baby gorilla.”
