Meet Sabrina Carpenter's parents.

The "Nonesense" singer is the daughter of Elizabeth and David Carpenter. She was born on May 11, 1999.

Prior to moving to Los Angeles at age 13, Sabrina was raised in Pennsylvania. She was homeschooled alongside her sisters before relocating to California, where she'd ultimately land a starring role on Disney Channel's Girl Meets World in 2014.

Her part on the 2014 Disney Channel reboot of the 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World marked her breakthrough role as an actress, but she'd been creating music long before. She began posting covers to her YouTube channel around age 10 before signing her first record deal at 12 years old.

Carpenter — who recently opened for close pal Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour — had her parents in her corner, supporting her interests in performing since her pre-teen years. "They were very, very kind and supportive. I always remember that,” she recalled of her family in an interview.

Both Elizabeth and David have experience as performers themselves. However, neither of them pursued entertaining to the level that Sabrina has as both a chart-topping singer and actress.

While Sabrina mainly keeps her social media to work-related endeavors, her siblings often post photos of their family. In 2020, her older sister Shannon posted a family photo in front of the Mean Girls marquee in support of Sabrina, who at the time starred as Cady Heron on Broadway.

Sabrina's mom, Elizabeth, is a chiropractor. According to her LinkedIn bio, she owns her own practice.

Growing up, though, Elizabeth was a performer in her own right. “My mom was a dancer in a company,” Sabrina said when speaking with JJ Ryan in an interview.

Sabrina followed in her mom's dancing footsteps, too. "I was a dancer my whole life growing up,” she said, prior to honing in on her singing and acting skills.

While Elizabeth didn’t pursue a career in singing herself, she did take vocal lessons at one point in her life. In fact, Sabrina shared in an interview that her vocal teacher was her mom’s old vocal coach.

David was in a garage band

Sabrina’s dad, too, has a background in performing — though, not at the level that the chart-topping singer pursued.

“My dad says he was in a band, but I think it was like a garage band — and I don’t really know if that’s true,” she told JJ Ryan in an interview.

When asked if she’s ever seen him perform, Carpenter replied, “No. Never.” Though, she did admit that she’s heard him sing covers of Rush. “That was it,” she said.

They encouraged performing when she was a kid

Sabrina has had support from her parents to pursue her dreams as an entertainer since she was young. “My whole family was very much around performing,” she’s previously said.

She credits her pre-teen performances in front of her family for building her confidence as a singer. “I remember being like 8 and 9 years old singing karaoke,” she recalled of family gatherings as a kid.

“Everyone just had way too much alcohol so they were so fascinated by this little 8-year-old singing karaoke," joked Sabrina. Though she seriously noted how “encouraging” it was for her “to be around adults that really believed” in her.

Sabrina went on to explain how adults can oftentimes view it as “annoying” when kids try to sing when they’re little, but she had a great crew in her corner.

“People were never like that to me. They were very very kind and supportive. I always remember that,” she recalled.

David built Sabrina’s first-ever recording studio

To further capitalize on the “supportive parents” point, David built Sabrina her first-ever recording studio in a closet in the house she grew up in when she was 10 years old.

“We used that one to make a recording studio for me as a baby so I could record YouTube videos, and it was really cute,” Sabrina said in a video for Urban Outfitters. “I was in this purple phase, ’cause all the girls at school really liked purple.'”

She continued, “He painted my entire studio purple, and put the foam walls up for me … It’s still there, but I don’t live in that house anymore.”

When speaking to Marie Claire, Sabrina credited that studio as the place where she "really found comfort in a creative space" at age 10. Two years later, she signed with her first record label at 12 years old.
