Sabrina Carpenter spoke with Billboard on the pink carpet at the Women in Music dinner and awards ceremony, which took place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles on Thursday (Nov. 30), about being amongst so many women in music she looks up to, including Kehlani.

“Music and women are two of my favorite things, and two of my favorite words, and I’m so, so excited to be able to be in the presence of so many people that I look up to and that are my idols and obviously all the women that are behind the scenes and making all the incredible moves in music that keep us moving forward,” she says. “I think music is just something that’s never been discriminatory. Every single one of these people that’s being honored is different, and they’ve all shined for different reasons and it’s very powerful.”

When asked who she was most excited to see at the event, Carpenter responded, “I’ve never met Kehlani and I’m a huge Kehlani fan! Like, really really big Kehlani fan so I’m very excited to see her, or just look at her hair from afar!”

The singer and actress also discussed how important her young female fans are, and what it means to have them view her as a role model. “I think I’ve always been that person that just tries to make good decisions for myself, and if other people follow along, that’s their choice. But I always encourage everyone to be themselves. We all have our own voices, and that’s how all these women, being so different, have gotten to where they are by following their own voices and not listening to everybody else.”

In the interview, which you can watch above, Carpenter also chats about what she is most looking forward to in 2018, covering SZA and what music she listens to every morning to start her day.
