Talakjung Vs Tulke has been selected as Nepal’s entry for the 88th Academy Awards in the best foreign-language film race.
Directed by Nischal Basnet, the dark comedy is set against the backdrop of Nepal's civil war, which lasted from 1996 to 2006.
The story revolves around a village laborer who is struggling to reclaim his lost aristocratic identity and seeks revenge against his tormentors. The film stars Dayahang Rai, Khagendra Lamichane and Richa Sharma.
Talakjung vs Tulke was considered a departure from more formulaic fare, both from the country's fledgling industry and India's Bollywood, which dominates the Nepalese box office. Following its theatrical release in Nepal in October, the film played at this year's Shanghai Film Festival.
Basnet's credits include 2012 title Loot, which was set in the country's capital Kathmandu and revolved around five young men seeking a route to quick money and a better life.
The 88th Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 28.
