Sydow is best known for roles in “The Seventh Seal,” “The Exorcist” and “Flash Gordon,” and will appear in the upcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”
Sydow’s addition to the cast comes two days after “Deadwood” star Ian McShane was recruited for a mystery role on the upcoming season.
Production has already begun on the sixth season of “Game of Thrones.” The series is nominated for 24 Primetime Emmy Awards, including best drama series.
HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said Thursday at the TCA summer press tour that “Game of Thrones” is likely to end following its eighth season.
