Judy Carne, who starred on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In as the "Sock it to me!" girl, died of pneumonia on Thursday at Northampton General Hospital in England, theNorthampton Herald & Post reports. She was 76.
Born Joyce Audrey Botterill in Northampton, Carne got her start on British television shows in the early 1960s. She eventually moved to the United States and starred on American shows including Love on a Rooftop and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. She also married Burt Reynolds in 1963, but they divorced two years later after Carne claimed Reynolds became abusive.
In 1968, Carne joined the sketch show Laugh-In, and became known for a recurring bit that ended with her saying "Sock it to me!," either intentionally or by accident, and then getting water dumped on her.

She left Laugh-In after its first two seasons but subsequently made guest appearances. In the late 1970s, she struggled with heroin addiction, was arrested several times, and suffered a near-fatal overdose. She outlined her struggles in a 1985 autobiography, Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl.
In recent years, Carne lived in the village of Pitsford outside Northampton. Her death was announced by a niece on Facebook, according to the Herald & Post.
