Floyd Mayweather Jr. Loses Title Won in Manny Pacquiao Fight

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been stripped of his latest belt.

The World Boxing Organization has revoked the legendary boxer of the welterweight world title he earned during his pay-per-view fight against Manny Pacquiao that broke all financial records and TV ratings for a boxing match.

Mayweather, who holds a 48-0 boxing record, missed Friday’s deadline to pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee. The WBO requires boxers to share a percentage of their earnings with the organization. Mayweather made more than $220 million from the Pacquiao fight.

“The WBO world championship committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title for failing to comply with our WBO regulations of world championship contests,” WBO said in a statement.

Mayweather also lost his two junior middleweight titles as the WBO prohibits boxers from holding world titles in multiple weight classes.

“It’s a complete disgrace,” Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com. “Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take. But in the meantime he’s enjoying a couple of hundred million he made from his last outing and this has zero impact on anything he does.”

“Floyd Mayweather has a great deal of respect for each and every organization, as he has always had in his 19-year career, but he will not be dictated to by any organization or person as it relates to his decision making.”

Mayweather has two weeks to file an appeal.
