Emmy Nominations: 13 Fun Facts You May Have Missed

If you watched the Emmy nominations live stream, you already have a list of snubs and surprises. But dig deeper and look at the full list of nominees, and you’ll uncover some fun trivia, unlikely races, and that Gotham is, technically, the king of Superhero TV.

Jane the Virgin
We’re making our own telenovela faces over the lack of recognition for Jane the Virgin and its star, Gina Rodriguez. But the critically-acclaimed (and Golden Globe-winning) The CW series did earn one nomination: Outstanding Narrator. Anthony Mendez’s dulcet voice is in a category that also features Neil deGrasse Tyson (Hubble’s Cosmic Journey), Miranda Richardson (Operation Orangutan), Peter Coyote (The Roosevelts: An Intimate History), and Henry Strozier (Too Cute!).

Glee
For its final season, the former Fox powerhouse generated a single nomination in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category. But there’s a silver lining in that dark cloud: The nomination was the first for cast member Darren Criss, who wrote the touching “This Time” number that, as he told Entertainment Weekly, was intended to serve as a swan song to the show. Mission accomplished.

Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program
Because where else can you see Katy Perry’s Super Bowl Halftime Show compete directly against an episode of Zach Galifianakis’s web series Between Two Ferns? But those two also face formidable competition from a Billy on the Street segment with Michelle Obama and Big Bird, as well as a Childrens Hospital episode and Key and Peele’s web series, Van and Mike.

Outstanding Variety Sketch Series
This is the first year where the Variety shows have been divided into separate talk and sketch categories. So while John Oliver and former boss Jon Stewart go toe-to-toe in the Talk Show group, the Sketch Series camp pits Comedy Central staples Drunk History, Inside Amy Schumer, and Key & Peele against IFC’s Portlandia and NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

Inside Amy Schumer
Besides the Outstanding Variety Sketch Series nomination, comedian of the moment Amy Schumer also scored a high-profile Outstanding Lead Actress nod. But the show also picked up five additional nominations, including Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the killer tune “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup,” which boasts such lyrics as “Wipe that goop off of your face/I’ll take you to a special place.”

Grace of Monaco
Despite being abandoned by its studio (The Weinstein Company) and Tweet-critiqued by its writer, the Nicole Kidman-starring biopic of Princess Grace Kelly had enough glamour to score a nomination for Outstanding Television Movie, as well as a secondary nod for Outstanding Hairstyling. Because the movie may be terrible, but at least Nicole’s hair looked amazing.

Outstanding Main Title Design
One of the most diverse fields has to be the Main Title Design competition, where Netflix’s blood-red Daredevil title sequence squares off against the freakish American Horror Story: Freak Show credits, with Olive Kitteridge, Bosch, Halt and Catch Fire, and Manh(a)ttan also in the mix. But there’s a serious lack of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which also inexplicably missed out on an Outstanding Main Title Theme Music nomination.

Superhero Television
Arrow fans will just have to console themselves with Olicity’s recent victory in the MTV Fandom Awards, because the Emerald Archer went nomination-less today. On the other hand, the scarlet speedster companion series The Flash secured an Outstanding Special Visual Effects nod, pitting it against Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in that show’s lone nomination. In addition to Outstanding Main Title Design, the Marvel-backed Daredevil series was cited in two other categories, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series and Outstanding Visual Effects in a Supporting Role. The Batman prequel Gotham proved the big winner among comic book-inspired shows, attracting four nominations: Outstanding Production Design, Outstanding Costumes, Outstanding Sound Editing, and Outstanding Visual Effects in a Supporting Role. Proof that you can’t keep a good dark knight down.

Lost Dog
Budweiser’s tear-jerking canine commercial topped polls for favorite Super Bowl ad, but it’s got to fend off the Big Game’s hilarious Brady Bunch-themed Snickers ad for the Outstanding Commercial Emmy. One thing we do know: That Nationwide kid never got the chance to experience what it’s like to be nominated for an Emmy.

Getting On
Unless you’re my mom, you may not have watched a single episode of HBO’s nursing home comedy series. But enough Emmy voters have seen it to foist co-star Niecy Nash into the Outstanding Supporting Actress category, which is a first for both Nash (best known for being a former member of the Reno 911! cast) and the show. This nomination should thrill Gillian Jacobs; when we spoke with the Community star in support of her acclaimed supporting turn on Girls, she advocated strongly for Getting On. “That show deserves a Best Comedy Emmy and all the actors and actresses deserve Emmy nominations. It’s a soulful show, because it’s talking about a lot of issues we don’t often see in comedy,” she said. “But it’s also hilariously funny and makes me laugh so hard.”

Girl Meets World
Boy Meets World was loved by an entire generation of teens, but got no affection from Emmy voters. Fortunately, Riley Matthews has leapfrogged her parents, Cory and Topanga, with a nomination for Outstanding Children’s Program. That pits her against another second-generation teen series, Degrassi.

The Mindy Project
For its final season on terrestrial television before it moves to Hulu, Mindy Kaling’s eponymous Fox series missed out on the big categories like writing and acting but was singled out for its costumes. Because both on the show and in real life, Kaling’s wardrobe is endlessly fascinating, inspiring its own Pinterest page and tribute website.

Chris Hardwick
The king of Comic-Con is now also king of interactive programming, according to the Emmys. Hardwick, who also oversees the Nerdist empire, picked up two nominations in the relatively new Outstanding Interactive Program category, which honors series that incorporate user-generated content. Comedy Central’s @midnight With Chris Hardwick and AMC’s Talking Dead both received their first nominations, which pits Hardwick directly against himself… as well as John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon, and the cast of the SNL 40 special.
