Adult Swim Dives Into Virtual Reality Space With Virtual Brainload App

Adult Swim, the cable network known for animation, comedy and general oddness, is leaping headfirst into virtual reality by launching its Virtual Brainload app on Tuesday available for free download on Google Play.

Although Adult Swim has released mobile apps in the past, Virtual Brainload is the network’s first foray into the VR space. According to a release put out by Adult Swim’s partner WEVR, a VR firm, the app is part of a network expansion with plans to release more custom content “later in 2015 and beyond.”

“We know our audiences are early adopters, and we aim to surprise them with new experiences like this,” said Jill King, senior VP of consumer and partnership marketing at Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang. “As we develop immersive content for our fans, we will keep our advertising partners front of mind and seek out opportunities to extend their brand into these experiences.”

The app’s bizarre description promises a psychedelic experience: “You’ll live the American dream, drifting bodiless and overwhelmed, free from the tyranny of choice and responsibility. But caution: Parts of this journey will test your mind as well as your body, and the person who emerges may not be anyone you know.”

The app is available for HTC One M8, LG G3, Moto X, Google Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6 and running Android Kit Kat and Lollipop. It runs in conjunction with Google Cardboard, an affordable VR platform developed by Google.
