Ryan Reynolds’ Pokémon Detective Pikachu Called 'So Cute' in Sweet First Reactions

Critics Are Loving Ryan Reynolds’ Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Ryan Reynolds‘ upcoming film Pokémon Detective Pikachu is weeks away from opening but first reactions are already flooding in — and they’re very positive!

The 42-year-old actor voices the iconic Pikachu and helps a young man, Tim Goodman, solve the disappearance of his father in the streets of Ryme City.

Several critics shared their reactions of the film online, including IGN‘s Terri Schwartz, who tweeted, “I just got out of #DetectivePikachu and my first thought is OMG HOW DID THEY MAKE PIKACHU SO CUTE!!!”

“It completely nails the world of Pokémon, and just seeing their amazing live action creature designs is worth the price of admission. If you love Pokémon, you’ll love this movie,” she added.

For those wondering how Reynolds will differentiate his wise-cracking Pikachu from his equally wise-cracking Deadpool, Schwartz adds in a second tweet that he does so remarkably well.

“The story is very sweet with some good twists and predictable beats. @VancityReynolds does a great job differentiating Det. Pikachu from Deadpool (of course). @standup4justice + @kathrynnewton are super charming. The tongue-in-cheek noir vibes they brought to it totally work,” she tweeted.

The AV Club‘s Marak Eakin also shared her thoughts, writing, “My reactions to #DetectivePikachu: so cute! Fun for the whole family! Pokémon obsessives will be pleased, but Poke novices will be able to follow along—and will maybe even get sucked into the whole world. In summary: I want to cuddle Pikachu.”

Nerdist‘s Dan Casey added, “#DetectivePikachu is a pure joy from start to finish. It’s a heartfelt, relentlessly charming story filled with excellent worldbuilding. Plenty of deep cuts for #Pokémon fans.”

“There must’ve been a grass-type in the theater because I got surprisingly misty-eyed in parts,” he wrote.

IMDb’s Ian de Borja also tweeted, “#DetectivePikachu is painfully cute, jam packed [sic] with action and will make you wish you lived in the world of #Pokémon more than you probably already do.”

The film was directed by Robert Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens, Shark Tale) and stars Suki Waterhouse, Kathryn Newton, Justice Smith, Bill Nighy, Rita Ora, Rob Delaney and Ken Watanabe.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is in theaters May 10.
