Ryan Reynolds and Katie Holmes Play Family on the Set of 'Woman in Gold'

Katie Holmes and Ryan Reynolds aren’t really in a family way, but they’re very convincing as a happy couple. Holmes was photographed sporting a fake pregnancy belly on the set of their upcoming movie Woman in Gold and the duo pushed a baby stroller around a San Fernando Valley reservoir yesterday while shooting scenes.

Reynolds and Holmes play a husband and wife in the drama, based on the true story of a Jewish World War II survivor named Maria Altmann (played by Helen Mirren) who fought to retrieve five Gustav Klimt paintings stolen from her family by the Nazis.

The bespectacled Reynolds sports a conservative, buttoned-down look to play attorney E. Randol Schoenberg, a relatively inexperienced lawyer who threw himself into Altmann’s case and ultimately made millions. The real Maria Altmann pursued her case against the Austrian government for years, ultimately winning in the U.S. Supreme Court in 2004. Altmann was in her mid-eighties during the court battle, but like any good film heroine refused to be dissuaded. (Her story has already been the subject of three documentaries.) “They will delay, delay, delay, hoping I will die,” Altmann told the LA Times in 2001 after her court date was pushed back. “But I will do them the pleasure of staying alive.” (She died ten years later at the age of 94.)

As for the “woman” in the title Woman in Gold, she’s not a character, but the subject of one of the disputed Klimt paintings, “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer.” A portrait of Maria Altmann’s aunt, it is often referred to as Klimt’s masterpiece (though it appears on fewer dorm room walls than “The Kiss”).

The film, directed by Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn), began shooting in May.
