Ryan Murphy to adapt Broadway musical 'The Prom' as Netflix movie

Broadway musical The Prom to be adapted into YA novel

Ryan Murphy has announced yet another unique project for Netflix.

The producer, who signed a massive, reportedly $300 million deal with the streaming service, announced tonight that he will be adapting Broadway musical The Prom as a movie for Netflix to premiere in 2020.

The show, directed by Casey Nicholaw with a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin and lyrics by Beguelin, is about a troupe of actors who decide to try to help a small town Indiana teen who’s fighting to go to her local with prom with her girlfriend.

Murphy hosted a special performance of the show Tuesday night in New York to benefit the Hetrick-Martin Institute, Trevor Project, and GLAAD, filling the audience with LGBTQ youth (also reportedly in attendance were stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Glenn Close, and Billy Porter).

The Prom joins Murphy’s roster at Netflix which includes teen comedy The Politician with Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as the Nurse Ratched origin story, Ratched, with Sarah Paulson.
