Ryan Gosling landed his third Oscar nomination this year for his role as Ken in the wildly successful summer movie, Barbie. Despite the controversial nature of the nominations with director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie missing out on their categories, the attention has now turned to the performances at the March 10 ceremony. Will Gosling sing “I’m Just Ken” live to a global audience?

Let’s just say that Gosling is ready to bring his “Kenergy” to the stage, but there is just one snag: he hasn’t been asked. “It might be too much of a risk to have me do it,” he explained to Variety about the Oscar-nominated song. “I don’t know how that would work. But I’m open to it.” Calling it “the hardest role I’ve ever had to play,” the Best Supporting Actor nominee has plenty of people to get him ready if he is selected to perform.

It was his daughters Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 7, who encouraged him while he was learning the choreography, created by Jennifer White, for the iconic “I’m Just Ken” number. He, of course, also leaned into the archives from his singing and dancing days on the All-New Mickey Mouse Club with Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. “I wanted to make sure if I was going to do it — I was like, ‘I can’t mess this up. I can’t be the guy that messed up the Barbie movie,’” he added. “So if I’m going to do it, I have to do more than I know that I’m even capable of.”

Doing the number on film is one thing, but performing live at the Oscars is another. When you are on a set, mistakes can be made, and another take can happen. If Gosling gets the opportunity to dance and sing in front of his Hollywood peers in the Dolby Theatre, he gets one shot in front of the entire world. There would be no turning back if he missed a step or sang the wrong note — talk about pressure!

But if anyone is up for it, it’s Gosling, especially since he has so many cheerleaders in his corner, including partner Eva Mendes, Gerwig, and Robbie. “They had a vision for [him playing Ken]. They believed it. And they believed I should do it more than I believed I shouldn’t,” he said. “At a certain point, I thought, ‘They see something that I don’t see.’ I thought it was such a great part that anyone could play it. I understand now, but it took me a while.” (He’s Kenough!)

Let’s hope the Academy understands that we need to see Gosling play Ken one more time, but this time, live.
