Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Dance Among the Stars in Romantic 'La La Land' Trailer

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are reuniting on screen for a third time this fall — and from the looks of their latest collaboration’s new trailer (watch it above), it’ll be a far more old-Hollywood-style romantic affair than either 2011’s Crazy Stupid Love or 2013’s Gangster Squad.

La La Land is a love-story musical from Damien Chazelle, the writer/director of 2014’s Whiplash, which earned three Oscars, including a Best Supporting Actor statuette for J.K. Simmons. In this first peek at the forthcoming award-season release, Gosling is heard crooning an original tune titled “City of Stars” over a montage of dialogue-free clips, which focus on his and Stone’s relationship over the course of numerous personal and professional auditions, dances among a planetarium’s stars, jam sessions with John Legend, and other assorted ups-and-downs — all of it culminating with a swoon-worthy only-in-the-movies kiss.

Following his stellar comedic work in May’s noir-ish buddy mystery The Nice Guys, Gosling’s turn in La La Land — which feels like a cross between a Ginger Rogers-Fred Astaire classic and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love — continues a streak of diverse projects ranging from the political (The Ides of March) to the criminal (Only God Forgives, Gangster Squad) to the financial (The Big Short). Set to make its world premiere at August’s Venice Film Festival, La La Land sashays into U.S. theaters on Dec. 2.
