‘Rustin’ will receive Icon and Creator Tribute for Social Justice at 2023 Gotham Awards

The Gotham Awards have announced that the Netflix biopic “Rustin” will receive the Icon and Creator Tribute for Social Justice at this year’s 33rd annual ceremony, which is set to take place on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The official Gotham Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, October 24.

“Rustin” tells the true story of Bayard Rustin (played by Tony nominee and Emmy winner Colman Domingo), who was one of the leading figures in the civil rights movement and one of the architects of the historic 1963 March on Washington, but he was marginalized for being gay. As of this writing Domingo ranks among the top five likely nominees for Best Actor at the Oscars based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users.

Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of the Gotham Film and Media Institute, said in a statement, “For the 33rd annual Gotham Awards ceremony, we’re thrilled to recognize both the inspiring hero of the civil rights movement, Bayard Rustin, and the remarkable film ‘Rustin’ from George C. Wolfe, Netflix and Higher Ground. This beautifully crafted and moving film shines a light on the visionary contributions of a proud gay Black man on the heels of the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington.”

The Gotham Awards honor the best achievements in independent film. Last year the top prize for Best Feature went to “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Winners in each category are decided by small juries of industry peers, leveling the playing field between the highest-profile nominees and under-the-radar contenders. Who do you think they’ll recognize this year in competitive categories?
