Rustic Romance: Barn venues take center stage in wedding trends

Jan. 31—The rustic charm of barns have been an alluring setting for unique weddings.

Heather Martello, owner of Martello Photography studio on Bridge Street believes that barn venues will continue to increase in popularity.

"Everyone seems to be renovating barns," she said. "I grew up on a farm and I appreciate the work it takes to renovate them."

Popular venues in the area include The Barn at Hart's Grove in Windsor, Running Horse Farm in Austinburg, and Standing Rock Farms in Madison.

The Barn at Hart's Grove has been in the Nye family for more than 100 years. The current family continues to honor the original owners Joanne and Robert Nye by celebrating their love and commitment to family.

"We felt old-style venues had limited space for scalability," said Executive Director Sarah Pike. "You can make barn venues shabby chic or upscale, which makes them very budget friendly."

The outside space boasts unlimited potential.

"It creates a unique photographic experience," she said. "We have several different photographers who know the space and really enjoy shooting here."

Running Horse Farm was originally owned by George and Barbary Stoltz who immigrated from Germany in the 1800s.

The original barn burned in a fire in 1946 and the farm was rebuilt. The barn is now owned by George's great-great-great grandson Gabe, his wife Megan, and her parents Tate and Jen.

"Couples want a more intimate gathering with their favorite people instead of having a huge wedding that includes all of the extended family," said owner Megan Accord.

"They want a more laid back experience and want their guests to experience something unique. Guests here can go outside and play yard games or stroll through the vineyards, have s'mores, watch the fireflies at sunset, and enjoy the history of our old barn."

In May 2020, the husband-and-wife team of Michael and Chelsea Palubiak purchased a historic plot of land in the Grand River Valley in Madison Township, thus creating Standing Rock Farms.

It is the former site of Camp Stigwandish, a longtime Boy Scout property.

"Our venue offers a cozy, intimate vibe, but with modern amenities," said owner Michael. "It's more than a trend, it's about creating moments and personal stories in a place that is timeless."

After exploring the charm and allure of barn weddings in the community, it's evident that these rustic venues have proven themselves to be timeless celebration sites. With their idyllic settings, picturesque backdrops, and a touch of vintage elegance, barn weddings are not just a trend, but a lasting tradition that continues to capture the hearts of couples and guests alike.
