SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez, who was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Former UNM football player found guilty of robbing postal worker

Gutierrez’s lawyers had filed a sentencing memorandum, which said she has undergone “undue hardship” from media coverage and asked for a conditional discharge, meaning she would be let out of jail and put on probation. The State said Gutierrez has yet to show remorse or take responsibility for her involvement in the shooting and continues to blame others for the cinematographer’s death and requested the courts sentence Gutierrez to 18 months in jail.

The state brought in a number of witnesses of Hutchins’, including her friends and the film’s director Joel Souza. Famed attorney Gloria Allred was also in court Monday and read statements on behalf of Hutchins’ family who are in Ukraine.

In the sentence reading, the judge read the definition of remorse to Gutierrez, and said that she showed none. “You were the armorer. The one that stood between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill someone. You alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon,” said Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer at the sentencing Monday.

Gutierrez is required to serve at least 85% percent of her sentence.
