SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez, who was sentenced to prison for her role in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a Santa Fe movie set in 2021, wants her conviction overturned.

A jury found Gutierrez guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March, and Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer sentenced her to 18 months in prison in April. Gutierrez’s lawyers filed a notice of appeal in the 1st Judicial District Court on Monday.

During the trial, the defense said that Gutierrez was being used as a scapegoat for bigger safety problems caused by the film production managers. State prosecutors said Gutierrez was ultimately responsible for the weapons and ammunition that killed Hutchins.

One of those bullets was loaded into a gun, which “Rust” actor and co-producer Alec Baldwin reportedly pointed at Hutchins during a rehearsal when it went off, killing her and injuring director Joel Souza.

Baldwin pleaded not guilty to an involuntary manslaughter charge. He is set to go to trial in July.
