Dmytro Orlov, the mayor of Enerhodar in Zaporizhia Oblast, has said that Russian occupiers put workers of the captured Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant [ZNPP] into the plant’s basements.

Quote from Orlov: "Now people are being taken straight to the nuclear power plant, they say that someone handed them over there, and they are thrown into the basements. There are more than a dozen such workers.

That is, people stay in the city to avoid any nuclear problems, safely operate the nuclear power plant, under moral and physical pressure.

There are few partisans left, even young people are leaving the city. It is unclear who will operate the nuclear power plant."

Previously:

Earlier, Energoatom said that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has about 500 Russian troops, as well as a large number of equipment and explosives, hence, Ukraine cannot entirely fulfil the safety guarantees given to its own citizens and the world; it still maintains control over the work of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

The occupiers told the heads of ZNPP's structural subdivisions that Russia wanted to place the nuclear power plant under Rosatom's control from 1 September.

Background:

  • Zaporizhzhia NPP and the city of Enerhodar have been occupied by Russian troops since 4 March.

  • Apart from the Russian military, representatives of the Russian nuclear energy corporation Rosatom have also been illegally staying at the Zaporizhzhia NPP site for a long time.
