Russia has sanctioned 100 Canadian citizens, including a number of public figures of Ukrainian origin, notably Stephan Bandera, the grandson of the leader of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists.

Quote: "In response to Prime Minister Trudeau's regime and its ongoing practice of imposing sanctions on Russia's leadership, politicians and parliamentarians, business representatives, experts and journalists, cultural figures, as well as all those whom the Russophobic Canadian authorities consider undesirable, we are reciprocally closing entry to 100 Canadian citizens. Among them are high-ranking officials, businessmen and activists from numerous pro-Bandera organisations, media and financial institutions that are directly involved in the formation of an aggressive anti-Russian policy," the ministry announced. ["Pro-Bandera" is one of the ways Russian propaganda refers to anyone who supports Ukraine – ed.]

Among the officials and politicians on the list are Caroline Xavier, Chief of the Communications Security Establishment of Canada; Peter MacKay, former Conservative Member of Parliament who served as Minister of Justice, Minister of Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs during his time in the cabinet; and Jean Charest, a former premier of Quebec.

The sanctions also targeted Orest Dzhulynskyi and Orest Protsiv, sponsors of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, as well as Eugene Zaraska and Luba Zaraska, founders of the Zaraska Foundation; the founder and board members of the Myhal Family Foundation; and representatives of the Ukrainian Credit Union and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.

Also on the list are Stepan Bandera's grandson Stephan, as well as actor Jim Carrey and actress Katheryn Winnick.

Earlier on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans to provide Ukraine with US$500 million in additional military aid and to impose additional sanctions on Russia.
