Steelers Country, it’s your turn to ride. Russell Wilson will be signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers soon.

League sources told ESPN that the Super Bowl winner will receive the veteran’s minimum salary of $1.2 million while the Denver Broncos pay him the remainder of his $37.8 million salary. Wilson shared a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, which showed off the Steelers and their rabid fanbase. “Year 13. Grateful. @Steelers,” he wrote in the caption. He already changed his profile picture on X to a photo of him edited into a Steelers jersey and helmet as well.

The nine-time Pro Bowler will be a strong addition to a team that found their way into the playoffs with a 10-7 record despite struggling at the quarterback position all year. Kenny Pickett was less than stellar before getting injured late in the season; backup quarterback Mason Rudolph was able to lead them to three straight wins to close the regular season and the very last seed in the postseason, but they did not have enough to overcome the No. 2 seed Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.

Russell Wilson’s future in the NFL became uncertain last Monday (March 4) when the Denver Broncos announced they were releasing him. Wilson spent two seasons in the Mile High City and was unable to lead the team to the playoffs. Beyond their struggles on the field, there was internal drama between the 35-year-old quarterback and Broncos head coach Sean Payton.

In September 2023, ESPN+ published a profile on Payton where he was open about his feelings toward Wilson. Specifically, he felt that the veteran quarterback wasn’t fully focused on football. “He told Wilson that to salvage his career, he needed to focus less on Russell Inc,” ESPN’s Seth Wickersham wrote. “‘Will you f**king stop kissing all the babies? You’re not running for public office.’”

Given the situational nature of the NFL and life at large, a change of scenery could yield great results for Wilson. He is proven on the football field already and with the Steelers possessing offensive weapons such as Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, George Pickens, Diontae Johnson, and Pat Freiermuth, this forthcoming NFL season could remind people how successful No. 3 can be and make the Steelers a serious threat in the AFC.
