Russell Westbrook Tells Us What Inspires His Glasses Designs

Even if you don't follow basketball there's a very good chance you know Russell Westbrook's name-and his style. Which makes sense. After all, he's one of the most fashion-forward men in the best-dressed league in American sports.

His looks can be daring, even divisive, but one thing that's not up for debate is the impact he's had on the eyewear game. Bold frames, worn both with and without lenses, have become the OKC Thunder guard's signature style move. No surprise, then, that he went ahead and launched his own optical and sunglasses company, Westbrook Frames, in 2014.

The brand's Gold Series just got a few new additions, each named after a neighborhood in the All-Star MVP's hometown of Los Angeles. Though he's paying homage to spots like Bel Air and Compton, Westbrook spends a lot of time on the road these days. "I travel a lot playing basketball and in the summer, so I am always looking at different things for inspiration," he tells us. "I take inspiration from everywhere."

In this latest drop, that translates to two chunky acetate styles-"I like the plastic frames because you can play with color a lot more"-and three metal models, of which Westbrook is particularly fond. "They give a more vintage feel," he explains.

Westbrook's been expanding his presence in the fashion industry with projects like a collaboration with Barneys, but he's particularly thrilled by the frames that bear his name. "I am excited to expand the creativity of the brand," he says, "and come out with more frames that appeal to different people."

He also has a little advice for anyone who might be hesitant to try out some of his more adventurous designs: "Be yourself, but don't be afraid to take risks. You can wear anything if you are confident in it, so if you find a pair of frames that you love, wear them."
