Russell Crowe Aims to Reconnect With Family in Exclusive 'Fathers & Daughters' Clip Costarring Jane Fonda

Russell Crowe over the years has played an L.A. detective, a tobacco industry whistleblower, a mentally unstable genius, a Roman general, a father to Superman, and — just this past spring — a thuggish “Nice Guy” bruiser paired with Ryan Gosling’s private investigator. However, for his next release, Fathers & Daughters, he’s taking on the role of a more ordinary man, an author and father reeling from a nervous breakdown. In the dual-time-period drama from director Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness), Crowe’s writer struggles — post psychological trauma — to regain custody of his daughter from her aunt and uncle in 1989, while his grown-up progeny (Amanda Seyfried) struggles to maintain a healthy romantic relationship with a new beau (Aaron Paul) in the present day. Like Muccino’s prior Will Smith-headlined work, it’s a sentimental tale of the strained bonds shared between parents and children.

In the clip above, Crowe’s character emerges from a psych ward to be driven home by his editor (Jane Fonda), a trip that inspires in him equal measures of hope and anxiety about what the future holds for his relationship with his daughter.
