At about the fourth grade, people with vaginas are educated in the subject of periods. They’re pulled out of their classroom and told it isn’t something to be embarrassed over, and then they spend their entire life until menopause hiding their pads and tampons in their pockets on their way from their office desk to the restroom.

Meanwhile, an absolute icon — RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars Season 4 contestant Manila Luzon — was ready to serve a fresh lewk when it came to periods — one that encouraged those who experience them not to feel ashamed. However, on Friday night’s episode, she was forced to wear her backup Chanel-adjacent look for the Curves and Swerves challenge because the producers deemed her original dress in “bad taste.”

But how is the menstrual cycle that roughly half of the world’s population has experienced monthly in “bad taste?”

Manila, inspired to end the stigma of menstruation, shared a photo of her original dress on Instagram, along with some comments on her experience.

Despite not experiencing a period herself, she said her goal was to “normalize menstruation by looking sick’ning even if I was on my period!”

Regardless of the dress drama, the seems to be no bad blood between Manila and Ru. “It is not my show, it’s Ru’s,” she wrote. “But because of Ru, I have my very own platform to speak for myself.”

A rep for RuPaul’s Drag Race did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
