“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on March 1 with episode 9 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the eight remaining queens faced their third design challenge in a task to create a “Neo-Goth” look that is both darkly twisted and fashionable. All of them received critiques from the judges and then made their way as a full group to the lounge with an unclear vision of how the winner and bottom two placements would unfold.

Plane Jane was a bit surprised that she got a “mixed bag” of critiques and wondered if maybe this is the week she should have used her Immunity Potion. Dawn told her that she made a “lovely and detailed” garment, but compared to the other more intricate designs by her, Q and Nymphia Wind, it didn’t measure up. Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige figured she’d be in the bottom because her dress didn’t measure up either and when Sapphira Cristál tried to downplay to the other girls her role in helping Mhi’ya, none of them were buying it because it put the rest of them in vulnerable positions, too.

Dawn and Morphine Love Dion expressed their frustration at being in the middle yet again with critiques that essentially amounted to them being great, but there’s also a few other girls who did better than you. Morphine didn’t think that she’d be in the bottom, but Q said that based on the commentary she’s likely bottom three. Plasma admitted that she got some of the worst critiques, but was “feeling some kind of way” for not following her own gut instinct and listening to Dawn’s advice to go in a different direction. She didn’t blame Dawn for that and took full responsibility for her decisions despite the judges joking that Dawn sabotaged her. One of her biggest frustrations was that they had a third design challenge in the first place.

Guest judge Kaia Gerber popped in to discuss fashion and construction with the girls, sharing her “respect and appreciation” for the fact that they create many forms of art and bring it together in one. She also made the point that as a model she only wears what other artists make and they, at least in this challenge, both made and modeled what they wore for her to critique.

To prepare for a possible bottom placement, Plasma and even Jane all decided to listen to the song, but Jane was convinced that she wouldn’t be lip synching anyway. With her Immunity Potion expiring next week, she felt secure that she’d make it to the top six because even if she bombs the next challenge she can save herself. Mhi’ya told Dawn she didn’t need to listen to the song anymore because she knows it well and is well-prepared to face off if she needs to.

In the end, Mhi’ya was right and she won another lip sync, sending Plasma home. As she packed up the next morning, Plasma reflected on her journey as an accomplishment because she didn’t think she “had two wins” in her and she got to impersonate Barbra and Patti, two musical theater legends and inspirations to her drag.
