‘RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked’ season 15 episode 7 recap: ‘The Sound of Rusic’

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 16 with episode 7 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the 10 remaining queens sang and danced their way through the Rusical “The Sound of Rusic.” The four safe queens this week, Plane Jane, Nymphia Wind, Xunami Muse and Dawn, were the first to return to the Werk Room while the tops and bottoms received critiques from the judges.

Relieved to be safe in one of the notoriously difficult challenges, the four queens realized that the top three were likely Sapphira Cristál, Q and Plasma and if Morphine Love Dion deserves a safe spot that would leave Megami and Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige in the bottom. Jane brought out her shade card when she referred to Plasma’s look in the Rusical as “rancid” and then suggested that Mhi’ya needs to “grow a personality” because she’s on television. As it turns out, Jane’s new leaf was only turned over temporarily. In their deeper analysis of the runway and challenge, they told Xunami that her floral look with no flowers made no sense and considered that the placements might be different had the queens taken different roles.

When the full group was together later on, Plasma told the girls that she felt like she received the validation in theater that she’s been looking for her whole life. Morphine understood that she was in the bottom three, but wanted to make it clear that she didn’t receive the worst critiques which both Mhi’ya and Megami agreed with. Megami owned that there’s things she can work on, but she took issue with Q’s positive critique about handling the choreo well because she didn’t believe that Q’s role had any noticeable choreo to master. Q countered that she didn’t have much choreo, but she “sold it” unlike Megami. Xunami brought up that Megami was talking a lot of shade about their group overall, including calling them “filler girls,” and advised her to focus her energy on herself.

Guest judge and Rusical choreographer Adam Shankman‘s visit to the Lounge was his opportunity to give them their flowers for working really hard. He told them that Melissa McCarthy also had kind words about them after she spent some time with them during rehearsal. The queens thanked Adam for creating a safe space for them as performers and for making them feel comfortable from the very beginning.

The morning after Megami’s elimination she was still “a little upset” because she felt like she beat Mhi’ya in the lip sync, but as she cleaned her stuff out of the Werk Room she was able to reflect on the “insane” process and how much she’s changed from the queen that walked in there on the first day. She believes that “drag at it’s core is a f**k you to society” and she loves “saying f**k you to the establishment.”
