“RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” kicked off its 9th season on Friday, May 17 with the first two episodes featuring returning queens from seasons past. In the sister series “Untucked,” now in its 6th “All Stars” season, the queens throw back a cocktail and dish the dirt backstage on the latest challenge. Check out our recap of “Untucked” episode 2 below.

This week the queens competed in “The Paint Ball,” walking the runway in three categorized looks: “Monochromatica,” “Drag Imitates Art,” and a third original creation that they had to design and hand paint from scratch. Prior to RuPaul Charles announcing the official top two performers of the week next to earn the coveted Beautiful Benefactress Badges, they gathered backstage to reflect on the fashion-focused challenge.

Jorgeous was relieved that the judges didn’t go harder on her because she was very unsure about her three choices, but Plastique Tiara said that her high praise “felt correct” and she was proud because she remembers being so close to winning the ball challenge in her original season. Gottmik called it a “dream challenge” because she got to paint for hours with Shannel out back and they used that time to bond with one another. Overall, it was clear to the group that both Plastique and Gottmik were up for the win and that Roxxxy Andrews was also in consideration. They were grateful that Roxxxy was kind enough to lend her sewing expertise to many of them during the creation process.

Aside from the official critiques, the queens discussed how much of a blessing it is to have the chance to speak directly to Ru in the Werk Room walkthroughs. Nina West sees Ru as a lifetime inspiration and so she looks for the “nuggets of wisdom” she bestows upon them while Plastique acknowledged that for the first time she felt validated by being able to speak to Ru on a more equal playing field this season. Plastique in particular had a tough journey learning to love herself as a drag queen and so she feels proud to be at a better place in this competition.

Later, the queens kept the artistic spirit going with a round or two of Pictionary where they drew back rolls (Alyssa Edwards reference), ducks (Anetra reference), biscuits (Latrice Royale reference), devils (Bianca del Rio reference), and popcorn (Jasmine Masters reference). Then, Stephanie Hsu joined them to share her gratitude for them sharing their art and perspective with the world and “shifting the conversation.” She also told them what a dream the year had been because of the awards success and special reception that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” offered her. She told them that drag queen culture was “in our pulse deeply” while they filmed the movie.

In their final moments backstage, once again the queens registered whether or not they thought they’d win the challenge by their decision to change or not to change for a potential lip sync moment. Plastique and Gottmik were the top two and Gottmik won the lip sync, choosing to cut off previous winner Angeria from a chance to receive a second badge next week. Angeria was “flattered” by the decision, but also promised to serve “revenge” back to Gottmik eventually.
