“RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” continued its 9th season on Friday, May 24 with the third episode featuring returning queens from seasons past. Making their way back into the Werk Room for the second time are Angeria Paris VanMichaels (season 14), Gottmik (season 13), Jorgeous (season 14), Nina West (season 11), and Plastique Tiara (season 11). Three queens are returning for the third time: Roxxxy Andrews (season 5 and All Stars 2), Shannel (season 1 and All Stars 1), and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo (seasons 10 and 11).

In addition to their chance at the coveted crown, this season the queens are competing to have a $200,000 contribution, provided by The Palette Fund, to a charity of their choice. Series judges RuPaul Charles and Michelle Visage will be joined on the dais by friends and series regulars Carson Kressley, Ts Madison, and Ross Mathews as well as a rotating cast of guest judges to help determine episodic winners and their choice for “next drag superstar.”

In episode 2, Plastique and Gottmik earned their first Beautiful Benefactress Badges as the top two performers of the week. When Gottmik was declared the overall winner, she earned $10,000 for her charity, Trans Lifeline, and cut off Angeria from the eligibility to earn a badge of her own in the next challenge. In the race to be one of the three queens with the most badges by the end of the season, Gottmik and Plastique joined Angeria and Jorgeous in the lead with one each.

Now, check out our recap of episode 3, titled “Snatch Game of Love,” featuring guest judge Anitta below:

Fresh off her Lip Sync for Your Legacy win, Gottmik had to explain to a playfully upset Angeria why she chose her to be cut off in the next challenge. She told Angeria that “you’re funny” and she’s anticipating a comedy challenge coming their way next that she could easily win. While Angeria was okay with the decision and understood it, Angeria declared she’s still willing to pay Gottmik back in the future. Later, when the queens were derobing, Shannel and Nina hypothesized about what the next challenge could be and found themselves sharing who their planned “Snatch Game” characters are only to discover that they both brought Liberace to the Werk Room as their first choice.

Nina and Shannel didn’t have a ton of time to reposition their plans because the next morning Ru arrived to announce that they were in fact about to compete in “Snatch Game of Love” for their next challenge. During prep time, Plastique expressed her own concern that this is the challenge she is most afraid of, especially on an all stars season where everyone else is so strong at characterization and comedy. Vanjie planned on performing as Cleopatra, Gottmik went with Pal (the dog that was Lassie), and neither Nina or Shannel showed any signs of moving away from doing Liberace. Shannel thought she was at the biggest disadvantage because as a queen from season 1, she never got to do “Snatch Game” in her original run on the show.

When Ru returned to the Werk Room later, she checked in with all of the queens to hear about their plans for the challenge. Roxxxy explained that she’d be arriving as Tasha Salad, a character she played in a challenge from a previous season, and Plastique revealed that her plan was Ali Wong. Around the room, queens thought that Plastique taking on an actual comedian for a comedy impersonation challenge was a big risk and then Ru warned her against getting “boxed in.” Angeria planned Marla Gibbs and Jorgeous told Ru she was going for John Leguizamo with the film “To Wong Foo” in her mind. Then, before leaving the queens to their business, Ru told them that the top two queens this week would receive two Beautiful Benefactress Badges, one to keep for themselves and another to give to another queen of their choice.

In the first round of “Snatch Game of Love” was Angeria, Roxxxy, Shannel, and Jorgeous fighting for the love of “Kevin,” but as soon as he laughed everyone recognized him as Monet X Change. The funniest moments here came every time Angeria answered a question and in her exit from the stage and in a few of Shannel’s sexualized responses. Jorgeous perceived herself as doing well and most of Roxxxy’s punchlines fell flat.

In the second round was Vanjie, Nina, Plastique, and Gottmik fighting for the love of “David,” who was actually a better-disguised-than-Monet Raven. In this group, Nina did a great job at interjecting into everyone else’s sets in order to direct laughs in her direction, but only Gottmik was capable of bouncing off of her while Vanjie and Plastique completely lost their way.

The next day as they prepared for the runway, the room swirled with thoughts about who they’d each give a badge to if they win. Shannel and Nina both said each other because of their shared Liberace experience, but Vanjie and Gottmik said that they should go to people that don’t have badges. But then Roxxxy pointed out that if Gottmik wins a second one for herself, it would be smarter for her to give someone a second badge in order to make them a target equal to herself. Shannel then added to the conversation that if her and Nina both won then they could technically give their second badges to each other so that they both have two, but that just ignited talk of a Nina-Shannel alliance. That’s when Nina confessed to the camera that she never promised she was giving Shannel a badge.

Seated at the Main Stage dais this week was Ru, Michelle, Carson and Anitta to witness the girls walk in the category “A Tail and Two Titties.” Angeria walked in a fiery dragon dress, Roxxxy went with a morphed Roger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit, Shannel came down as a “Mad Max Thunderdome” scorpion, Jorgeous was cute as a chihuahua from Beverly Hills, Vanjie was also a scorpion but pink, Nina did her best to stretch the concept of a “tail” by creating a universe dress and a comet’s tail, Plastique as the nine-tailed fox figure Kitsune, and Gottmik took the opportunity to reference her top surgery with a plastic surgery look that kept the titties in a bag and a high ponytail on her head.

During judges’ critiques, Michelle applauded Angeria on “giving it all” in the challenge and Anitta said she looked “so glamorous” while walking the runway. Anitta also loved Roxxxy’s look because of the details, but Michelle noted that she didn’t always know where to go with her character in the challenge. Carson said that Shannel looked stellar on the runway and Anitta said that she made her laugh the most in the challenge, but Michelle thought she was too concerned with being perfect rather than funny. The judges liked Jorgeous on the runway, but she was middle of the pack in the challenge because Michelle said she didn’t take it far enough. Michelle thought that Vanjie started strong as “Cleopatra from the hood,” but she didn’t stick with it long enough. Carson said that there are angles of Vanjie’s runway look that were “off the rack.” Anitta called Nina’s runway “smart and creative” and Carson called it “so elevated.” Michelle told Nina that she “breathed life and comedy” and “took him all the way over the top.” Carson told Plastique that she was “thinking too much,” but Anitta called her runway costume the “most beautiful” she’s ever seen. Michelle gave Gottmik credit for her creativity in the challenge and called her “hysterically funny” in a “home run” performance. Carson added that both her “Snatch Game” and runway presentations were “thoughtful” and “cool.”

After further deliberation, it was decided that the top two all stars of the week were Nina and Gottmik. That earned them their own Beautiful Benefactress Badge and another to give away at the beginning of next week’s episode. In order to determine the overall winner, they lip synched to Anitta’s song with Becky G, “Banana.” For their performance looks, Gottmik brought back her Pal coat and wore it over her runway look while Nina returned this week with her “This is my lip sync dress” oversized shirt that in the performance she tore away to reveal other catch phrase garments. While Nina got hung up on clunky costume reveals, Gottmik brought the sex appeal that the song called for. Despite the other queens distractingly cheering for Nina the entire performance, Ru named Gottmik as the winner.

Once again, the win required Gottmik to cut off another queen from the chance to earn a Beautiful Benefactress Badge next week. She stuck to her “original game plan” by going for someone she sees as a threat and used the Ruby Snippers on Jorgeous.

NEXT TIME: Gottmik wants to know why everyone was only cheering for Nina and then the makeover challenge comes early with the arrival of firemen.
