Bull on NJ Transit train tracks at Newark Penn Station

Morning commuters in New Jersey had a bullish obstacle to overcome.

New Jersey Transit revealed on social media that there was a 45-minute delay for trains going from Newark Penn Station to Pennsylvania Station in New York City on Thursday morning due to a bull standing on the tracks.

The agency shared a photo of the animal — a brown bull with white horns — lounging in the middle of the tracks near the edge of a railway station.

New Jersey Transit noted that as a result of the bull's presence, there was heavy "police activity" at the Newark station and that rail tickets and passes would be honored by the "Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) and Hoboken, Newark Penn and 33rd Street New York."

New Jersey Transit did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

A New Jersey Transit conductor confirmed to PEOPLE that the train delays and suspensions were caused by "a bull on the tracks in Newark."

A source who had been on their morning commute at Newark Penn Station on Wednesday recalled to PEOPLE that they had "heard some commotion, like people laughing and screaming" at the station around 10:15 a.m.

Jorge Pinto, who works at Abreu Truck Services in Newark, told PEOPLE in a statement that he heard reports of bull sightings near his workplace earlier in the morning. Abreu Truck Services is 2.5 miles from Newark Penn Station and less than a mile from a slaughterhouse.

"So there I was chatting with the lunch truck guy ordering a bacon, egg, and cheese like I usually do at that time when he starts telling me about a cow on Frelinghuysen… I get inside and start eating my sandwich when my coworker [begins] to show me pictures of a cow on Frelinghuysen," Pinto shared. "I couldn't believe it."

WABC reported that police received calls about a bull on the tracks around 10:30 a.m., and by 11 a.m., the animal had gotten off the tracks.

In a statement from Fritz Frage, a Newark public safety director, obtained by The Guardian, Frage shared, "At approximately 10:46 am today, Thursday, December 14, 2023, police responded to Frelinghuysen Avenue near Victoria Street on a call that a bull was observed loose behind a building. Members of the Newark Police Emergency Services Unit assisted Port Authority PD in locating the animal and contained it inside a fenced lot without incident. The animal will be retrieved and safeguarded by a local animal sanctuary. No injuries have been reported."

The name of the sanctuary that will take over the animal's care was not included in the statement.
