'The rug was pulled out from under us': French bistro at iconic inn closes after 15 years

Though Google notes it as a temporary closure, Bistro Soleil, the restaurant at the iconic and historic Olde Marco Inn & Suites, has shut for good after 15 years.

Having survived numerous challenges spanning hurricanes, 2008's financial crisis, BP's Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the pandemic and personal health issues, owners Lisa and Chef Denis Meurgue attributed the surprising shutter to the building's recent inspection.

The couple wrote, “Following a recent city inspection, the 1883 landmark building that houses our restaurant was determined to be structurally unsound and necessary repairs could not be safely or realistically achieved.”

They added “Although we understand the situation, closing so suddenly has been a shock and has not allowed us time to prepare. The rug was pulled out from under us, robbing us of an opportunity to say goodbye properly and in person. We are sincerely grateful for all the wonderful guests who have been part of our journey, and we wish we could offer a big hug.”

According to Olde Marco Inn Condominium Association's website, "After extensive consultations with engineers, architects, and city officials, we have concluded that the bistro section of the Olde Marco Inn cannot be saved."

Angled tables on slanted floors

Among the regulars who will miss Bistro Soleil the most are Marco residents Linda and Anthony Riviezzo, whose last visit was in October.

“Bistro Soleil was the best restaurant on the island when you considered the combination of food, service and ambience. The food was outstanding,” said Mr. Riviezzo.

His favorite items from Chef Denis’s kitchen included brie en croute, escargot, grouper and “especially short ribs in a red wine reduction.”

Another favorable facet: The way tables were arranged on an angle “enabled you to use your inside voice.” On their website, the Meurgues mentioned the challenge of leveling those tables on their slanted floor.

Echoing Marco Eagle dining correspondent Will Watts's 2018 review, Riviezzo added that service was “always top-notch, attentive but not intrusive.”

Riviezzo had high praise for Lisa Meurgue, who knew her guests, their seating preferences, and their likes and dislikes. For his vegetarian daughter, the Meurgues crafted off-the-menu dishes. He greatly appreciated their efforts with a special appetizer for their granddaughter “who had never had scallops. Of course, the dish was perfect.”

What will the Riviezzos miss most?

“Dining either as a couple or with guests in a quiet, non-frenetic atmosphere, where you can enjoy a drink before dinner, and at dinner, enjoy a good conversation.”

The Meurgues' 2016 offshoot Petit Soleil served breakfast and lunch at Shops of Olde Marco, which is part of Olde Marco Inn’s campus. It closed in 2020 and is now home to Smith House.
