RRT to kick off mainstage series with 'Grumpy Old Men'

Oct. 25—Robidoux Resident Theatre is bringing a "grumpy" musical to the stage this weekend, but the cast and crew are feeling anything but that ahead of the show.

RRT is presenting "Grumpy Old Men" on Oct. 27-29, beginning the 2023-24 mainstage series at the Missouri Theatre.

The musical, based on the movie of the same name, follows two feuding neighbors, John and Max (played by David Rich and Mike Evans), who both develop feelings for their new neighbor, Ariel (played by Leslie Stone).

Evans said he's excited to have such a prominent part in the show for many reasons.

"It's one of the bigger roles that I've ever had, so it's really neat," Evans said. "And it's also been really cool working with David who plays John. We went to high school together, so it's kind of fun because, in this show, they went to high school together as well. So ... the little name-calling back and forth is kind of fun because we've always been friends, but we get to kind of, you know, play act against each other, which is really nice."

Jessica Agnew has been directing shows with RRT for 10 years, and she said this show can resonate with many people.

"There's got to be at least one person in this audience that connects to one of the actors in the show," Agnew said. "I mean, those characters are so relatable. It's so funny. It's so heartwarming. I mean just the emotional rollercoaster you'll be on is incredible."
