There is no denying that Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany are a huge success, but there is a glaring hole that permeates this event: the royal family feud. With King Charles III and Prince William just a short plane ride away in the U.K., their absence is noticeable. Even with their estrangement, what the Duke of Sussex has continued to accomplish with the Invictus Games is monumental and there is no one from his family there to show support.

It’s not just something the press is noticing; the British athletes feel slighted by the royal family as well. The Telegraph spoke with a U.K. team member who “admitted that although Invictus was getting bigger every year, it was felt there could be more support back home, particularly when there had been a notable focus on sport among the Royal family in the past week.” Another Invictus source added, “The athletes find it bizarre but don’t want to get caught up in the royal crossfire.”

Even a British publicist, who chose to stay anonymous, noted, “It’s ironic Buckingham Palace has had more to say about the Highland Games than the Invictus Games, despite the honorary military roles they hold. In doing so, the palace ends up looking mean-spirited and petty. The ill will against Harry should not be held against the Invictus competitors.” If they want to hold those honorary military titles, shouldn’t they be waving flags of support? It wouldn’t be for Harry; it would be for the incredible athletes who are all military veterans.

The athletes have also chimed in with their views on Harry and it’s probably not what the royal family wants to hear. “We love him here,” athlete Rich Waldrom gushed. “You’ll never get a bad word out of any of us for Harry. Look what he’s built. Look what he’s created for us all.”
