The Royal Family Just Gave Queen Elizabeth's Stamp Scene in 'The Crown' a Social Media Nod

We knew it! Her Majesty (or her social media handler) has been binge-watching like the rest of us — it would seem that stamp scene in The Crown just got a royal response on Twitter. So, sure, the royal family hasn’t come right out and admitted they’ve been watching the popular Netflix show’s recently released third season. But c’mon, the timing of their tweet about royal snail mail can’t be a complete coincidence.

As fans of The Crown know, the first episode of season three showed the queen being presented with a new portrait to appear on postage. This made sense both historically, since time had passed, and cinematically since she is now being played by Olivia Colman as opposed to Claire Foy. In the opening scene, Colman’s Elizabeth views her old stamp portrait and new stamp portrait side-by-side.

Enter the official Twitter handle of the royal family, who decided to share the real-life process behind commissioning the portraits and creating the stamps. “These photographs taken by Dorothy Wilding, of Her Majesty in 1952, were used as the basis of The Queen’s image on postage stamps from 1953 until 1971. In two sittings, photographer Wilding took 59 images of The Queen,” reveals one tweet.

Another reads, “Arnold Machin’s effigy of The Queen, which has featured on UK stamps since 1967, is widely considered to be one of the most reproduced and iconic images in the world. It has been reprinted an estimated 220 billion times, in more than 130 different colours.”

In full disclosure, the Queen had just visited the new headquarters of the Royal Philatelic Society, which happens to run a postal museum. So, that could have been the inspiration for the tweets. However, we’re far more inclined to believe that the royals really do watch The Crown — and the Queen’s doubled as a convenient alibi allowing them to post about the series without every fully admitting that they’re hooked on it.

After all, some members of the royal family have reportedly fessed up to being fascinated with the show. According to the U.K.’s Express, Princess Eugenie feels “very proud to watch it,” and Zara and Mike Tindall think it’s “a great show in terms of how they delivered it.”

All 10 episodes of The Crown season three are currently available on Netflix, in case you want to get on the Queen’s potential binge-watching level.
