Ross Lynch 'Doesn't Think About' His Rising Sex Symbol Status: 'I Just Go About My Life' (Exclusive)

The singer and actor is making headlines for his latest music video “Rumors” along with his appearance in Troye Sivan’s “One of Your Girls” video

Ross Lynch is heating up the music scene, one music video at a time.

The 27-year-old actor and singer — who is known for his role in the Disney Channel show Austin and Ally — has grown up, making headlines as “The Internet’s Boyfriend” after starring in Troye Sivan’s “One of Your Girls” music video in October.

The “steamy” music video features Lynch shirtless, posing for the camera and then sitting while Sivan, 28, dances around him as his love interest. And while Lynch has sent the internet into a frenzy over his role in the video, it was a last-minute decision to be involved.

“My little brother Ryland got a call just a random spur-of-the-moment kind of thing that was like, ‘Hey, Troye really wants Ross to be in his music video, but you have to get on the red-eye to New York tonight,’” the singer tells PEOPLE. “My gut was just like, ‘You’ve gotta do it’ — so we flew to New York and we did it.”

Filming the music video, Lynch says, was worth the last-minute trip. “It was a really, really fun experience. To be honest with you, Ryland and I both didn't recognize Troye at first in his drag. He looked fantastic,” the Driver Era singer says. “But honestly, the experience was wonderful. I think Troye is a wonderful person. I'm really, really, really happy that I was a part of it.”

While Lynch says he “expected a reaction” to the music video, he didn’t realize how big it would be. “I didn’t expect it to be quite that big,” he tells PEOPLE. “I honestly underplay how much popularity I've gained over the past 15 years. I just don't think about it, it's not at the forefront of my focus… You go back home and you're hanging out with Mom at Mom's house. She's cooking meals, you're doing the dishes, you just go back to regular life… it’s just quite a juxtaposition.”

Lynch admits that Sivan himself asked about his rising status. “Troye even asked me, ‘How does it feel to be the Internet's boyfriend?’,” the actor says. “I was like, ‘Honestly, I don’t think about it.’ I don't really read a lot of comments or anything on Instagram or Twitter... I just go about my life every day trying to make good stuff, trying to make art, trying to have fun.”

The My Friend Dahmer star is focused on making “good stuff” with his brother Rocky, who is his other half in their musical group The Driver Era. The duo released their latest single “Rumors” in October, and the accompanying music video debuted on Wednesday. Comparing it to the “One of Your Girls” music video, Lynch tells PEOPLE that for the “Rumors” video, “We went a little bit more artsy, conceptual, abstract with it, so it's not nearly as steamy, but there are some spicy bits.”

The “spicy bits” of the music video may or may not include some dancing, a near kiss and, of course, a glimpse at the star’s six-pack.

When asked if there will be a music video accompanying their latest single, Lynch says “Probably at some point.” “We feel like we're making the best music we've ever made right now….Usually, that means we'll probably bundle them together, and there'll be an album at some point. What that'll look like, we're not really sure yet, but we are really excited about some new tunes that we're making.”
