Rosie O’Donnell Is Joining And Just Like That … Will She Be Miranda’s New Love Interest?

I couldn’t help but wonder: What will Rosie O’Donnell’s character be like on And Just Like That season 3?

The actress and Emmy-winning TV host revealed via Instagram on Wednesday night that she will be playing “Mary” on the third season of the Sex and the City sequel series, posting a picture of the script for the season’s first episode, “Outlook Good.” O’Donnell offered no further details about her chracter, writing simply, “here comes mary” in the caption. Fans have already speculated, however, that O’Donnell may play a new love interest for Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda Hobbes.

Several celebrities left comments applauding O’Donnell’s casting on the hit series, including Ilana Glazer, Michelle Visage, and Hacks actor Johnny Sibilly. A viral tweet — which reused video of people celebrating first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic — also summed up many fans’ positive reactions to the O’Donnell news.

Though she started her career as a stand-up comedian and is most well-known for her television hosting duties on The Rosie O’Donnell Show as well as The View, O’Donnell has had an extensive acting career, with roles in A League of Their Own, The Flintstones, and Harriet the Spy. On TV, O’Donnell has also had guest appearances on Will & Grace, Drop Dead Diva, and Nip/Tuck.

And not just because Miranda admitted her relationship with Che was a “trainwreck.”

O’Donnell’s casting comes after news in February that Sara Ramirez would not be returning to portray nonbinary comedian Che Diaz for the series’ third season. Though many people wanted to root for (arguably mediocre) nonbinary representation, the character became the subject of intense public scrutiny, which Ramirez described as “hostile.”

Prior to the official report that Max axed Ramirez’s character, Ramirez shared a post on Instagram that seemed to hint that they had been fired from the show for protesting the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the country's ongoing siege of Gaza.

“Our industry is so duplicitous,” Ramirez wrote the night after the Emmy Awards, as reported in the Daily Mail. “'While they give awards away, casting directors and agents are making blacklists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians in Gaza to ensure they will not work again.”

Alongside Ramirez, Karen Pittman, who played brilliant-but-struggling-in-love Dr. Nya Wallace, exited the series earlier this year. Though no release date has yet been set, a promo released in 2023 indicated that the show would return to the air in 2025.
