Roseanne Blasts ‘The Conners’ Spinoff for the ‘Cruel’ Way Her Character Is Killed Off

Roseanne Barr says her character will be dead when ABC’s “Roseanne” spinoff “The Conners” debuts later this fall.

After Barr was abruptly fired by ABC over a racist tweet earlier this year, it had previously been unclear how the show’s once-titular character’s absence would be explained — ABC still has made no formal announcements about the show’s plans — but Barr now says she knows how it will play out.

“Oh ya, they killed her. They have her die of an opioid overdose,” Barr said in an interview with YouTuber Brandon Straka over the weekend.

Barr’s on-screen husband, John Goodman, previously said that Roseanne would likely be killed off the show, but revealed no details. When asked last month about his own character’s future on the spinoff, Goodman said things were still “unknown.”

“I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead,” he suggested at the time.

Toward the end of the 1980s sitcom revival’s most recent season, it was revealed that Barr’s character had become addicted to painkillers after a knee injury. The season finale seemed to indicate a happy ending to that particular storyline, but those plans seem to have changed.

The “Roseanne” revival was one of last year’s biggest success stories, debuting to high ratings and dominating much of the cultural conversation throughout its run. However, the network was forced to cut ties with its biggest star in May after a tweet comparing a former Obama adviser to an ape was met with heavy backlash.

At the time, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey called the tweet “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”

Barr initially seemed contrite about the tweet, offering numerous apologies for the wording, but in the months since, her public comments about the network’s decision have grown increasingly heated.

“It wasn’t enough to do what they did to me,” Barr told Straka. “They had to so cruelly insult the people who loved that family and that show … [But] there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s done. It’s over. There’s no fight left.”

“The Conners,” which will focus on the show’s central family in the absence of Barr, is set to premiere in October.
