Rose McGowan responds to news her attorneys joined Harvey Weinstein's legal team

Rose McGowan‘s drama with Harvey Weinstein continues.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that two attorneys who represented the actress — one of the most outspoken Weinstein accusers — have joined Weinstein’s legal “dream team” as he fights rape charges. Jose Baez and Ronald Sullivan, who defended the actress in her 2017 drug case, which was resolved via a plea deal earlier this month, are now Team Weinstein. McGowan had publicly accused Weinstein of planting the drugs in her wallet, which was left on an airplane.

McGowan, who reached a $100,000 settlement with Weinstein in 1997 after she claimed he raped her, spoke out about the “major conflict of interest” in an interview with the Daily Beast. She also tweeted that, considering their long history — including allegations Weinstein used spies to track and discredit her — she’s “not even surprised by the level of f***ery going on.”

“This is a major conflict of interest, but I knew there was shadiness going on behind the scenes,” she told the news outlet.

“This is why my case didn’t go to trial — my instinct was my lawyers had been bought off,” she added. “I thought Harvey would get to them behind the scenes and I wouldn’t have fair representation.”

McGowan also said that she asked Baez, who also represented Casey Anthony who had been accused in the death of her daughter, “if he would ever work with Harvey.” She expressed her fear that “he would be bought off while representing me.” McGowan said Baez — who got an acquittal for Anthony on murder, manslaughter and abuse charges — replied, “‘I don’t like to lose.’”

Baez and Sullivan said in a statement to the Daily Beast: “We were pleased to represent our former client, Ms. Rose McGowan, in a matter unrelated to Mr. Weinstein’s current charges. After consultation with ethics counsel, we are certain no conflict of interest exists. We wish Ms. McGowan well with all her future endeavors.”

McGowan also reacted to the news on Twitter.

She also shared a copy of an email exchange, purportedly between Weinstein, whom McGowan refers to as “monster,” and his attorney Blair Berk, who will also reportedly be playing a bigger role in Weinstein’s defense. “I took care of getting the arrest warrant issued against her back in February 1 just so there would be no fingerprints. Damn,” Berk supposedly wrote on Oct. 30, 2017 — two weeks after McGowan said #MeToo and claimed publicly that Weinstein raped her. (Berk has not yet responded to a request for comment.)

McGowan is one of dozens of women to accuse Weinstein of sexual misconduct, but she is not involved in the current criminal proceedings against him in New York City. The disgraced movie mogul, who has denied all accusations of nonconsensual sex, faces charges in Manhattan of rape and sexual assault. The case goes to trial on May 7.

Benjamin Brafman had been representing Weinstein, but they parted ways last week. Also, part of Weinstein’s new dream team is attorney Pamela Mackey, who represented Kobe Bryant when he was accused of rape, and Duncan Levin.
