Rose McGowan opened up about her choice to have an abortion in an effort to get an “honest” conversation going around the topic.

The 45-year-old actress and activist made the revelation Friday when responding to a tweet from the women’s advocacy group UltraViolet that said, “1 in 4 women has an abortion by age 45. 60% are already mothers.”

“I have had an abortion and I support this message,” McGowan replied, adding, “I was on birth control and it failed. I realized I could not bring a child into my world and simultaneously change the world. I do not regret my decision and it was not made lightly.”

The Charmed actress encouraged women who have made the same decision to chime in using the hashtag #HonestAbortion. Many took the opportunity to share their story.

However, there were plenty of people who didn’t agree with McGowan’s message or hashtag (some more respectful than others about their differing opinion).

McGowan was one of the first women to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. She has become one of the most outspoken voices of the #MeToo movement, advocating for victims of sexual violence. (The disgraced producer has denied all claims of nonconsensual sex.)
