Rose McGowan fires back at Harvey Weinstein after he breaks his silence

Rose McGowan’s new docuseries, Citizen Rose, debuted on E!, and it was deeply personal and incredibly powerful.

The two-hour premiere episode began with McGowan stating, “I cannot tell you how enraged I am. ‘Cause it’s not just about me. It’s about anybody that’s ever been disbelieved. Being brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It just means you do it anyway.” Citizen Rose was mostly filmed vlog style, as McGowan gave us a glimpse into the pain and hardships that she went through to come forward with the truth about what Harvey Weinstein did to her. Of her transparency, McGowan also stated, “You just never really had someone from the other side telling you the truth. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: I’ve lived in a motherf***ing fun house. And the sad part is, I’m just trying to get people to stop raping and killing us.”

However, hours before the premiere, Harvey Weinstein broke his silence about McGowan. His lawyer, Ben Brafman, released a statement that said, “As a general matter, Harvey Weinstein and his attorneys have refrained from publicly criticizing any of the women who have made allegations of sexual assault against Mr. Weinstein despite a wealth of evidence that would demonstrate the patent falsity of these claims. Watching the ‘performance’ by Rose McGowan as she looks to promote her new book however, has made it impossible to remain quiet as she tries to smear Mr. Weinstein with a bold lie.”

McGowan, who has refused to call him by his name, instead referring to him as “the monster,” immediately responded to the insult by tweeting, “I’m going to step on your fat neck for all time #HarveyWeinstein. I WILL SAY YOUR NAME. It is you who did this to us. THIEF! And to all of you scoundrels aiding predators you are damned for the hurt you’ve caused. We reject your social lies. Name it. Shame it. Call it out. #CitizenRose

And she didn’t stop there. McGowan continued to voice her rage, also posting this tweet about an hour later:

Twitter was definitely on McGowan’s side. Jessica Chastain tweeted her support, writing, “I will always support you #Brave one. I wrap my arms of love around you with healing compassion. Please #WatchRoseNotTrump today and make visible the once ignored. Sunshine is the best antiseptic”

Others tweeted that they were watching Citizen Rose instead of President Trump’s State of the Union address.

Citizen Rose premiered Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. on E!
