Rory McIlroy reveals heart condition that will require monitoring
It’s been a little while since we’ve seen Rory McIlroy tearing up the leaderboards around the world.
As the former No. 1 golfer gets set to end his months-long hiatus next week in Abu Dhabi after a winless 2017, he recently sat down with The Telegraph to catch up before his return to competition.
It was during that interview where McIlroy revealed that he developed a heart condition after suffering a viral infection while in China nearly a year and a half ago. According to McIlroy, he has a thickening of the left ventricle that will require an electrocardiogram every six months and an MRI once per year.

The good news is that this isn’t something McIlroy believes will derail his career or cause any significant changes to his regimen.
”There’s a bit of scar tissue,” McIlroy told The Telegraph. “For now, I just need to stay on top of it and have to stay fit. Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway.”
After the interview, McIlroy took to Instagram to further assure his fans that all is well.

Hearing McIlroy discuss the issue in such a calm manner is certainly a relief, but it’s always scary to learn about these types of health issues. As long as McIlroy and his doctors are in control of the situation, it doesn’t seem there is much to worry about.
The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship begins on Jan. 18 with McIlroy searching for his first victory since September 2016.
