“The Rookie: Feds” crossover episode with ABC flagship “The Rookie” sees the team dig deep into the motivations of a serial killer, finding clues about the suspect’s abusive relationship with his father and the nature of his gruesome killings. In this week’s episode of “Feds,” which you can preview in the exclusive clip above, Simone (Niecy Nash), Laura (Britt Robertson) and her former colleague Mark Atlas (guest star, “The Flight Attendant’s” Deniz Akdeniz) journey to Tucson to save the suspect’s next victim.

In the minute-long clip, Laura and her trainee Brendon (Kevin Zegers) examine a water chamber that claimed the lives of one of the killer’s victims. They identify intricate metalwork on the container, leading the former — a professional profiler — to conclude the serial murderer is meticulous and intentioned with his crimes.

While en route to apprehend the suspect, Laura and Mark, also a profiler, grow closer as they debate the killer’s motive. The episode, titled “To Die For,” also stars Felix Solis and James Lesure.

“The Rookie: Feds” brings Nash back to the role of Simone, the oldest rookie in the FBI, just like Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan analogous character in the LAPD training program in Season 1 of “The Rookie.” The original series first introduced Simone, who developed a friendship with Nolan in the Season 4 backdoor pilot of the spinoff in “The Rookie.” Co-creator, co-showrunner and executive producer Alexi Hawley told TheWrap in an interview that the spinoff was intentionally set in Los Angeles to allow for further universe-sharing storylines.

“There was a version of a spinoff that was another police show set in another city, ‘The Rookie: Austin’ or ‘The Rookie: New York’ or whatever. For us, it was exciting to create something that could work in tandem, but stand alone [from the original],” he said.

The fourth episode of “The Rookie: Feds” premieres Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. Watch episodes on-demand and on Hulu the day following its airing.
