‘Roma’ Director Alfonso Cuarón Signs Overall TV Deal With Apple

Alfonso Cuarón, who won an Oscar for directing his 2018 Netflix film, “Roma,” is moving to one of the streaming services’ many new competitors, signing an overall TV deal with Apple.

Under terms of the multiyear deal, Cuarón will develop television projects exclusively for Apple TV+ through his production company Esperanto Filmoj. The upcoming streaming service from the tech giant will become available on Nov. 1, and cost $4.99 a month.

The deal adds another major producer to Apple’s stable as the company prepares to throw its hat in the ring of the highly competitive streaming game. Cuarón joins Oprah Winfrey, Sesame Workshop, Peanuts owner DHX Media, as well as producers like Justin Lin and Jason Katims at Apple.

Apple TV+ will debut 11 days before Disney makes its own highly-anticipated streaming debut with Disney+, which hits the market Nov. 12. Apple TV+ will launch with a smaller content slate including new series “The Morning Show,” “See,” “Dickinson” and “For All Mankind.”

In producing television projects exclusively for Apple, Cuarón is expected to partner with longtime partner Anonymous Content (where he has a non-exclusive deal) and other collaborators on select projects. Cuarón’s long-time producing partner Gabriela Rodriguez will run day-to-day operations at Esperanto Filmoj, based out of London.

In addition to directing and cinematography Oscars for “Roma,” Cuarón also won for directing and editing his 2013 film “Gravity.” His other feature films including “Children of Men” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
