Roller skating is back in a big way in Palm Beach County with Astro Skate Family Fun Center

After thousands of work hours put in by several teams of tradesmen during the late spring and summer months, Palm Beach County's sole roller skating center reopened with a soft launch on Aug. 11 as Astro Skate of Palm Beach County in Greenacres.

"Dude, if you didn't buy this rink there would be no roller skating in Palm Beach County. The nearest rink south is almost 48 miles, the nearest rink north is 80. You can't have 130 miles of densely populated area without a roller skating rink. What are kids going to do?" said owner Christopher Maganias during an interview on the iconic blue painted concrete skating surface of the former rink, Atlantis Skateway.

Maganias owns a total of seven skating rinks across the state.

Palm Beach Post photographer Thomas Cordy captured tens of thousands of images to reveal the renovation work over the course of weeks. Sequences show the ceiling tiles with a new coat of black paint, a new sealed wood floor built atop the former concrete surface, demolition of a restroom, installation of a new carpet and many other aspects of the skating rink's new look and vibe.

Five things to know before you go to Astro Skate Family Fun Center

  • The building is easy to see. It's painted pink!

  • Wednesday is Pizza Skate night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Free pizza for the first hour.

  • On Thursdays only, the office and pro shop are open.

  • Hip-hop family skate is Sunday nights from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

  • Need help skating? Learn to skate classes are Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m.
