‘Rogue One’ Director Says George Lucas Liked the Movie

The fine people over at Star Wars had a weekend press conference in advance of that little ol’ film coming out this month Rogue One. Among the panel members was the movie’s director, Gareth Edwards. The British director, best known for his 2014 film, Godzilla, said that Star Wars patriarch George Lucas had seen this new spinoff.

“We got to show George the movie, and we all had a phone call and I got to speak with him yesterday, and I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say I can die happy now,” Edwards told reporters. “He really liked the movie, so it meant a lot. To be honest, and no offense to anyone here, it was the most important review to me. … His opinion means the world to me.”

Regulars here at Yahoo Movies might recall that Edwards has previously gushed about Lucas, a man he finds influential on not only his career but the entire field of cinema. “I owe my whole career to George because I got inspired by Star Wars, and then not only that, he pushed technology forward,” Edwards shared. “He inspired a generation with wanting to make films, and then he gave them all the tools to go make them.”

A stamp of approval from Lucas has got to be a good feeling for the guy. Especially since Lucas hasn’t been totally on board with the new direction under Disney. Remember what he said to Charlie Rose? “I loved [my Star Wars characters]. I created them, I’m very intimately involved with them, and obviously, to sell them off, I sold them to white slavers.”
