Origins is a recurring new music series that gives artists a platform to talk about everything that went into their newest release. Today, Rodrigo y Gabriela break down “Descending to Nowhere” from their upcoming album, In Between Thoughts…A New World.

Guitar virtuoso duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have announced their new album, In Between Thoughts…A New World, arriving April 21st via ATO Records. The first single, “Descending to Nowhere,” is out now with an accompanying music video.

The follow-up to 2019’s Grammy-winning Mettavolution was self-produced by Rodrigo y Gabriela at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. Inspired by nondualism after recovering from COVID, Rodrigo channeled his new discovery into the form of music.

“I found a video on nondualism that resonated a lot with me and it felt like a switch [turned on]. I started to introduce this concept to Gab and she was skeptical at first,” Rodrigo tells Consequence. “I didn’t explain myself because I couldn’t… I didn’t know how to explain it, but it was incredible and liberating, and I was sharing the authors that I was listening to [like Rupert Spira, Francis Lucille, and John Wheeler]. She got into it, eventually. At the same time, everything was shut down and we were writing music because that’s what we do!”

Pre-orders for In Between Thoughts…A New World are ongoing. Check out the cover art and tracklist below.

The transcendent nature of the duo’s music shines through in “Descending to Nowhere.” It reflects the everlasting impact of the music they have created across two decades, and their expressive nature lends itself to furthering their creative exploration.

Tickets for Rodrigo y Gabriela’s supporting North American tour go on sale this Friday, February 17th at 10:00 a.m. via Ticketmaster. Alternatively, you can purchase them at Stubhub.

COVID-19:

Rodrigo y Gabriela’s studio in Zihuatanejo

This song doesn’t have one specific inspiration because it is part of a whole project. The way we wrote the album was without having the story already made, but we had the topic in general for the full album. So the album process basically started after we stopped all this activity when COVID hit. We did all this social media for a few months and then we came down to Mexico, where I got COVID. It forced me to be at home for two months because of a slow recovery, and after so many years of seeking something — people call it spiritual-seeking — I think I was doing the same.

I found a video on nondualism that resonated a lot with me, and it felt like a switch [turned on]. I started to introduce this concept to Gab and she was skeptical at first. I didn’t explain myself because I couldn’t… I didn’t know how to explain it, but it was incredible and liberating, and I was sharing the authors that I was listening to [like Rupert Spira, Francis Lucille, and John Wheeler]. She got into it, eventually. At the same time, everything was shut down and we were writing music because that’s what we do! — Rodrigo Sánchez

Advaita/Nonduality:

It is inspired by nonduality teaching and the whole story is about a character we call Advaita, which symbolizes us humans and the different aspects of the existence of one individual. What I mean about different aspects is, for example, in our western society we as a culture tend to value things that ultimately don’t really, really, really matter that much. Like, the “do-er culture” — we need to strive, we need to win, we need to try, we need to be somebody and have stuff and own things, or else we are nothing.

Other aspects would be the spiritual-seeking mode. This is searching to be more spiritual to find spiritual answers, and that can also be really stressful for one person. As a species, we are facing true challenges and we can divide a little bit of these challenges into groups. One of these groups would be that most of us live in a hostile environment at work, home, school, with our own projects, with our own colleagues, or with our own self.

Sometimes we face our own individual turbulent emotions. Other challenges can be the environmental crisis, climate change, the economy, health… just to mention a few. So in order to face all of these forces, it is important to know that there are resources that we can profit from, like this nonduality teaching. It says to us that we don’t need to search in order to become MORE. Essentially, we can experience what we ARE already. We can only experience what we are and when we experience that, we become at peace and less hectic, we become more patient, less discriminative, and that’s really good for your health and for everyone else.

A lot of these things have been based on my story with a book called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, and another great woman who’s doing a lot of great things named Brene Brown and her last book called Atlas of the Heart. There’s another book called The Second Mountain by David Brooks, and teachers named Rupert Spira and Anthony de Mello. — Gabriela Quintero

Anime:

Attack on Titan

For the video, we recently were introduced to the world of anime. After talking to Olallo [the director], we had the idea of doing some kind of animation based on the anime that we’ve been watching. Monster is one of them and [so is] Attack on Titan. That kind of helped me think, “Oh yeah, maybe this topic about Advaita can be well represented in this style of anime.” We showed this anime to Olallo, which is kind of an ’80s fashion vibe. Besides the whole Advaita and nonduality, this is the inspiration behind the video. — R.S.

Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra

Without any agenda, when we started working on this music we didn’t think, “Oh this is a new Rodrigo y Gabriela album.” We just started writing music. That’s probably why we started adding this different instrumentation to the album that we probably would have never added if we knew this was the new album. We added electronics and effects.

We have this amazing friend, Adam Kuruc, and we thought it would be great to add some orchestration and he was into it! We were working on it like a soundtrack of a story of a person that goes through a spiritual journey. We wrote and recorded each song in order, and then produced it and recorded it in our studio here. Then Adam added the Bulgarian Orchestra with 50+ musicians. Next, our friend Jamie Monti mixed it and Greg Calbi mastered it. — R.S.
