Rod Wave was taken into custody this week for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, but there may have been some foul play involved in his arrest. His attorneys released a statement to clarify the alleged wrongdoings.

“The officers responsible for the arrest have made a mistake,” Bradford Cohen and Mark Rankin, the Florida singer’s legal representatives, told TMZ. “Our client is not a convicted felon and has never been one. It is disappointing that further investigation was not conducted prior to the filing of these charges.”

Sources told TMZ that the “Boyz Don’t Cry” artist has since been released of his own recognizance, but jail records have him still marked down as in custody. In any event, his legal team will not rest until this error wrong is righted. “As with any case we will hold those parties that made the error accountable for their actions,” they said.

Rod Wave was arrested on Wednesday (April 3) on two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was booked at Manatee County and even posed for a mug shot. His arrest records made their rounds on X (formerly Twitter) and, in true X fashion, fans made light of the fact he was listed at 5’6″ and 350 pounds.

“Called Rod Wave a baby shower meatball lol,” one X user wrote. “They said we dropped 2 of him on Japan lmao,” another user replied.

While Rod Wave is reportedly free, WFLA reported that five men in connection to him were arrested for a shooting on Sunday (March 31) that left four people injured. The shooting took place outside of Sonic Sports Bar and Lounge and the victims’ injuries aren’t life-threatening. “Mentally, they’re hurt, mentally this community is hurting, because we are tired of the senseless shooting in our community,” Police Chief Anthony Holloway said.

Rod is no stranger to legal troubles, as he was arrested in May 2022 on a felony charge of battery. He allegedly choked his ex-girlfriend while their two children were in their home. He was arrested a week later during a routine traffic stop in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The charges against Rod Wave were dropped soon after, with his attorney Bradford Cohen citing a “misunderstanding” in the situation, per an email to Pitchfork. “That misunderstanding resulted in Mr. Green’s arrest. After review of the evidence and speaking with witnesses, the State entered a Nolle Pross/ No Info on the matter and will not be pursuing charges.”

Cohen followed up on Instagram, saying “Sometimes misunderstandings can be misconstrued and it isn’t until all the evidence and witnesses are reviewed that the right decision is made by the States Attorney.”

Rod Wave spent the tail end of 2023 on the Nostalgia tour accompanied by Ari Lennox, Toosii, G Herbo, and Eelmatic. The tour was in support of his latest album, the September 2023 LP Nostalgia, which was anchored by the singles “Fight The Feeling,” “Call Your Friends,” “Come See Me,” “Boyz Don’t Cry,” and “Checkmate.”
