Fox’s “Rocky Horror Picture Show” reboot airs this Thursday with (nearly) a whole new cast. The two-hour event is a reimagining of the cult classic, which is celebrating 40 years of theatrical distribution — the longest run in the history of film.
By airing on network TV, the small screen version lacks some of the original’s entertaining eroticism.
In fact, Variety TV critic Sonia Saraiya calls the Fox version a “wholesome broadcast television movie musical, premiering at the kid-friendly hour of 8 p.m.” that “courts mainstream, millennial viewers through casting former Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice and ‘American Idol’ star Adam Lambert.”
She adds, “this version of ‘Rocky Horror’ is flat and Disney-fied.”
Adults who tune in for the nostalgia factor will recognize Tim Curry, the original Dr. Frank-N-Furter, in a new role as the Criminologist. Laverne Cox of “Orange is the New Black” fame takes over as the mad scientist lead this time around, and trained hard for it.
But who are the other newcomers that are taking on the original roles? And what has the 1975 cast been up to in the last four decades?
