Alamo hosting 'Rocky Horror' movie party

Do the Time Warp again with Alamo Drafthouse as they host a movie party for the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

Originally produced for the London stage in 1973, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" was Richard O'Brien's musical tribute to B-movies, sci-fi, ‘50s rock, and Hammer Horror, as filtered through the transgressive and camp attitudes of rock-opera and punk. A huge success, the play caught the attention of 20th Century Fox, who fast-tracked a low-budget theatrical adaptation.

Featuring most of the creative team and cast of the original production – including Tim Curry reviving his much-acclaimed performance – "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" was a flop when originally released in September 1975. Now one of the most beloved and enduring camp classics of all time, it is still shown in theaters across the country and has become a cultural phenomenon that is a unique and unforgettable experience for all patrons.

Wallace presents 'Jekyll and Hyde'

CATS presents 'A Murder is Announced'

Children and Adults Theatrical Studio (CATS), 2257 34th St., wraps up its production of "A Murder is Announced" by Agathat Christie at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28.

After an advertisement in the local newspaper announces the date and a time a murder is to take place at Little Paddocks in the small village of Chipping Cleghorn, an unknown visitor becomes the victim. There is a second death and small details reveal that residents are not who they seem. Police inspector Craddock works to resolve the circumstances of the crimes, but one of the guests, a sleuth named Miss Jane Marple, takes it upon herself to get to the bottom of it. The lovely costumes reflect the 1950s and the fantastic set is built to transport the audience to a beautiful Victorian drawing room.

This production is directed by Marissa Olive and Dea Young-Smith. Lights and sound (Ryan Tullis and Marissa Olive) are elements that add a lot of fun for this show, and they are just perfect.

Alamo to screen original 1978 'Halloween'

Join Alamo Drafthouse for a special screening of the 1978 original "Halloween" at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.

In 1978, legendary New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael reviewed John Carpenter's "Halloween". She didn’t like it.

Eternal respect to Ms. Kael, but what she disdained more than 40 years ago are the very elements that have made this film endure for over four decades.

"Halloween" might not have resembled the “sophisticated” horror films of the 1970s, but the simplicity of the film’s story and production values allowed Carpenter to focus on staying one step ahead of the audience. From Dean Cundey's flowing, blue-hued photography to Carpenter's minimalist score to the blank, ominous mask of Michael Myers, nothing in this moody, terrifying film is misplaced.

LCT Stages to perform 'Spookley the Square Pumpkin'

The Lubbock Community Theater, 3101 35th St., is hosting its Stages group performance of "Spookley the Square Pumpkin the Musical" at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 28 and at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 29.

Spookley The Square Pumpkin: The Musical tells the story of a square pumpkin living in a round pumpkin patch on Holiday Hill Farm. Shunned by the other pumpkins, Spookley is befriended by Edgar, Allan and Poe, three hilarious spiders who convince him that, square or not, he has a right to be the Pick of the Patch.

Encouraged by kindly Jack Scarecrow, Spookley tries his best, but he isn't sure he has what it takes until a mighty storm threatens Holiday Hill Farm.

Spookley realizes it is up to him and his square shape to save the day. As a result, all the pumpkins in the patch learn that the things that make you different make you special.

Sheridan to speak at Holly Hall

Buddy Holly Hall hosts In Conversation with Filmmaker Taylor Sheridan at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, as the Texas Tech University Presidential and Performance Series.

Sheridan is an Academy Award®-nominated writer and actor as well as a member of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. A Texas native himself, Sheridan excels in the Western horse performance industry as an avid supporter and competitor in reining and cutting.

Temptations, Four Tops to perform at Holly Hall

The Temptations and the Four Tops are set to perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, in the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall.

Often referred to as American Music Royalty, The Temptations are world-renowned superstars of entertainment, revered for their phenomenal catalog of music and prolific career. The group celebrated their 60th Anniversary throughout 2022. Ranked No. 1 in Billboard magazine’s most recent list of the “Greatest R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of All Time,” The Temptations also appear in the magazine’s 125th Anniversary list of the “125 Greatest of All Time Artists.”

The Four Tops, originally called the “Four Aims,” spent several years on the road and in nightclubs, singing pop, blues, Broadway, but mostly jazz — four-part harmony jazz. Projections of animated films dazzle the audience, while the band re-creates original soundtracks note-for-note, or writes their own fresh compositions to modern pieces, all the while breathing new life into two uniquely American forms of art: jazz and animation. Tying everything together is the TQC brand of comedy - anecdotes about the cartoons and their composers, stream-of-consciousness humor, and elements of a musical circus.

Watch your favorite classic cartoon characters interact with the musicians on stage, and expect the unexpected from the Golden Age of Animation, cult cartoon classics, and modern animated films. Inspired by the cross-roads of jazz, classical music, and cartoons, TQC features Jazz Age composers like Carl Stalling, Raymond Scott, and Duke Ellington, alongside classical giants Mozart, Rossini, and R. Strauss (to name just a few).

Alamo hosting 'Christmas Vacation' movie party

Celebrate the season like an honorary Griswold.

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock is hosting a "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" movie party at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26.

No one knows how to do vacations like the Griswolds. Sure, their holidays are wild, chaotic, and often fraught with peril, but everyone’s family gatherings are a little stressful, aren’t they? Fortunately, you can just let Clark and the gang shoulder all that stress while you enjoy the ride at our "Christmas Vacation" Movie Party.

We’re giving it the full Movie Party treatment, with special props like pine tree air fresheners, yellow glow sticks, and ugly neckties to help you feel like you're an honorary Griswold. It’ll be more fun than a membership to the Jelly of the Month Club.
