Rockin’ the River announcement in Luzerne County

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— The hint of 80s in the forecast can conjure up thoughts of summer. So can a free, local concert series along the banks of the Susquehanna River.

“Visit Luzerne County” announced the return of the 6th annual Rockin’ the River. The series has become one of Luzerne County’s most popular summer events.

Millennium Circle at River Commons in Wilkes-Barre will look and sound a lot like a concert soon. The free Rockin’ the River concert series is set to return on July 12, 19, and 26.

“What I love about Rockin’ the River, it’s the little old lady from Plymouth, sitting next to the college student, sitting next to the family from plains. It’s about community, everybody’s out here enjoying this music together, at a beautiful venue, where could we go wrong,” stated David Pedri, President and CEO, of Luzerne Foundation.

The series kicked off in 2019 and has drawn crowds ranging from three thousand to six thousand people. This year, the lineup features the Unforgettable Fire: A Tribute to U2, Winslow: An Evening with the Eagles, and country pop artist Lanie Gardner.

“Most of the folks that come are from our own community, we do it for our community, but that rolls right into tourism, because those people have a positive attitude about their community, they feel good about where they live and where they work. And that only could project itself out to more people outside of the area,” explained Alan Stout, Executive Director of Visit Luzerne County.

Organizers spend months preparing for the event and note the lineup of musical tribute bands is fresh and new. Those who live in the community say live music brings people together, and there’s a need for more of it in the area.

“It’s live entertainment, what the valley thrives with. It gives us a reason to come out, see the great view of the Susquehanna River, socialize with people, and enjoy life,” said Michael Dale, of Wilkes-Barre.

The concert series is made possible by sponsors and community partners.
